Half Marathon Training Program - Elite
The most complete half marathon build we write. Race-specific volume at speed, structured doubles, and weekly threshold work, built for runners who want their half marathon to be a result, not just a finish.
Full description
Eighteen weeks designed to get you to the start line ready to hold race pace longer and more confidently than the runners around you. The training builds toward sustained work at and around race pace, with dedicated LT1 work every week and two quality sessions throughout the block. Doubles are structured with a clear purpose and guidance on where they fit, not simply added for the sake of mileage. We spell out how threshold work, race-pace sessions, and the long run fit together in a week that can reach 80 miles, and use deloads strategically so the hard weeks actually move your fitness forward.
The sessions come from blocks our Atomic Race Team has actually trained through. Benchmark workouts return at four points in the program, giving you objective markers of progress rather than asking you to guess whether you're getting fitter. At this level, the small things matter. You'll get guidance on heat acclimatization, strides, carbohydrate loading, gut training, race-week logistics, and pacing based on your own numbers. Strength and injury guidance comes from physical therapists who work with competitive runners–an important distinction when you're asking your body to handle this much training.
The block at a glance
18 weeks, including taper and race week. Six to seven days of running with structured doubles, peaking at 78–88 miles per week, with long runs reaching 20–22 miles.
One honest note: this tier only works if the mileage fits your life. If you can't consistently run the volume, the Advanced program will likely produce a better race than an Elite plan you can't complete.
Where these sessions come from
The Atomic Race Team is a group of competitive athletes training out of Boulder. The team includes Boston qualifiers, elite women training at the US Olympic Trials standard, sub-75 half marathoners, Bolder Boulder top-five finishers, and athletes competing at USATF Championships. This program isn't built from a generic template. It mirrors the training our own athletes are actually doing.
Also inside
Pace charts in miles and kilometers, heart-rate and effort zones, a printable training log, and an online tracker pre-filled with every run.
